Housing will be with other Adelante Abroad students in a flat located in Edinburgh. Scottish Plant Hunters Garden (1 spot available) Located in the town of Pitlochry in the Scottish Highlands is a public garden that commemorates the Scots who travelled the world looking for new species of plants. The Garden is divided into different areas of the world over six acres of Woodland on the slope behind the famous Pitlochry Festival Theatre. Several improvements have been made and are still on-going to enhance the Garden for visitors. Housing is to be determined each year: you will always have your own room and can be in a self catering apartment or in a shared guesthouse with participants in the Theatre Festival. Students will have the opportunity to assist the Garden team to learn about a variety of plants, their origins and garden uses, and work on specific garden projects and designs. Affected by the seasonality of animals and the weather, the type of wildlife in the Rescue Center can change throughout the year. Pre-veterinary students also may be interested in Adelante’s four-week Equine Summer School.

“I could not have asked for a better internship opportunity than the experience I had here in Edinburgh. All of the people who we interacted with for our program were so friendly and helpful. Our living situation was spectacular- right off the Royal Mile! The actual internship program at the University was absolutely outstanding. We had the opportunity to learn new software, code data, run participants, research new literature, and I even had the opportunity to work with a professor to collaborate on a brand new study. Definitely the right program fit for me and has immensely grown the confidence and ability I have in my research skills. I would definitely recommend this program to anybody that wants to further their research experience in a unique and independent way.”

“I owe so many thanks to Adelante Abroad for allowing me to satisfy my love for travel while also getting to fully immerse myself into living in another country. The staff at Adelante was so quick to answer any questions I had, whether it be from preparing for my trip to things to do while actually in Scotland. I spent weekends traveling to the Highlands, Iceland, and London in addition to doing some sightseeing throughout the city (such as some of the many museums, the castle, etc.). I think you don’t truly get the cultural experience unless you are actively trying to immerse yourself in the city and its surroundings. Overall, I would recommend Adelante Abroad to any independent traveler looking to gain work experience.”

“This study abroad program is extremely organized and willing to work with you. The internship was great, I was able to work with a professor who was really conducive to my interests and passions. I felt really safe throughout my trip and the location of our apartment was absolutely perfect. I could hike Arthur’s seat and also visit New Town, all within 10 minutes from my apartment. The city itself is absolutely magical, and there is so much to do. I recommend going in the summer because Scotland weather is divine during June and July. I would highly recommend this program.”

Observation & Research in Scotland FAQs

What Happens After I Apply to go to Scotland, Step By Step?

Once you apply online, we’ll send you a link to our calendar to schedule an initial phone or Google Meet assessment interview. This takes about 30 minutes, and in it our Program Director determines if you are a good fit for the program, and you determine if what the program offers, you are wanting to do. Once both parties have mutually assessed positively, then we send out a Letter of Acceptance and a setup date for a second, longer Google Meet for initial orientation.

Prior to this second meeting, you will be emailed a link to confirm your spot in the program via a confirmation fee. For the orientation, bring all of your detailed questions and be ready to take a lot of notes! Once you complete orientation, you will be required to pay a $500 program deposit to secure your place.

Once your placement is assigned, we then contract you, with a mutually signed agreement between Adelante, the host company, and you. Concurrently, we coordinate your housing.

We like to be done with the entire step-by-step process no later than about 45 days prior to your program start date, so candidates know both where they are living and exactly where they are interning long before they arrive abroad.

When does the Scotland Observation & Research program begin and when can I plan on arriving?

The Observation & Research in Scotland program runs once a year for 6 weeks in the Summer (end of May to beginning of July each year). For 2027’s program, candidates will arrive on May 23rd.

Is there an Adelante contact for the Scotland programs?

Yes, our country director for Scotland, Dr. Ray Barclay, who has more than 25 years experience placing students in international internships and study abroad programs.

Dr. Barclay is the architect of our signature Scotland Programs and is an excellent resource. He has decades of higher education experience, specifically within abroad and international programming for university students.

Candidates are given his contact information long before their scheduled start date, for access as needed during their program abroad.

Is my $500 holding deposit refundable?

No, except in special cases as outlined in our terms and program agreement. This deposit secures your spot as these are always limited placements in each field, and each one is a competitive opportunity. It also signals our Director of Programs in Scotland to begin the placement abroad process with participating faculty members.

Failure to pay this means that you may lose your spot in one of our placements. This amount is deducted from the cost of the program, not an additional fee.

How much should I budget for living expenses per month, above and beyond what is included in the program fee?

For Edinburgh, Scotland we suggest approximately $150 – $200 USD per week, and this covers normal expenses like groceries, bus & train money, some going out and one or two nearby excursions a month.

The budget goes up when you start going out at night more and when you begin to travel further abroad (which we encourage!).

Is this a paid Observation and Research position?

No, all of our programs are unpaid as we are not an employment agency. These programs are put together for students to get experience in their field of interest. Our programs will drastically upgrade your resume for future employers or graduate programs.
