Internships & Volunteering in Oaxaca, Mexico
Volunteer or intern in Oaxaca, Mexico across a range of fields. Affordable programs with housing included and flexible durations from 2 to 6+ months.
Oaxaca is one of those cities that gets under your skin quickly. Located in south-central Mexico along the Sierra foothills, it is a place where ancient Zapotec, Mixtec, and Aztec heritage is woven into everyday life, where artisans from surrounding indigenous communities fill the streets, and where the food is so celebrated that entire festivals are dedicated to it each year.
Adelante chose Oaxaca for its programs because it is simply a great place to live. The city sits at around 5,000 feet above sea level, giving it a mild, pleasant climate year-round. Within half an hour, you can be in pine-filled mountains. A short trip in another direction brings you to Hierve el Agua, a natural stone waterfall formation. The world’s widest tree, El Tule, is just a few kilometers outside the city. Beaches at Mazunte, Puerto Escondido, and Huatulco are within reach for weekend escapes.
Adelante’s programs in Mexico include both internship and volunteer placements, making it one of the most flexible destinations in our network. Programs are available year-round and suit a wide range of academic backgrounds and interests.

Adelante’s Mexico programs are based in Oaxaca de Juárez, the state capital and cultural heart of the Oaxacan region.
Downtown Oaxaca is a beautiful old colonial city with an alternative, artsy energy. The historic center is a mix of centuries-old churches, colorful markets, indigenous art, and lively plazas that come alive at night. Adelante’s housing is in central Oaxaca, in working neighborhoods close to public transit, grocery stores, cafes, and bars.
The city is known internationally for its food, its art, and its indigenous communities. Shopping at local farmers’ markets, trying the different mole sauces, drinking Oaxacan chocolate, and picking up hand-painted Alebrije figures and Black Pottery are all part of daily life here.
Life outside of your program in Oaxaca is one of the richest cultural experiences Adelante offers anywhere in its network.
The city itself keeps you busy. Local markets, mezcal bars, street art, and a food scene unlike anywhere else in Mexico fill the weekends. The annual Guelaguetza festival celebrates indigenous Oaxacan culture with music, dance, and food, and draws visitors from across the world.
Day trips are easy and genuinely rewarding. Hierve el Agua, the stone waterfall formation, is a favorite. The ancient Zapotec ruins at Monte Albán sit just outside the city and are among the most significant archaeological sites in Mexico. The beaches at Mazunte, Puerto Escondido, and Huatulco are a few hours away and well worth the journey for a long weekend.
Most international participants in Adelante’s Mexico programs enter the country as tourists and do not require a visa for stays of up to 180 days.
Visa requirements vary by nationality and program length. Adelante can provide basic guidance on visa requirements as part of the pre-departure process, but participants are required to check with the Mexican consulate or embassy in their home country before their start date to confirm the requirements. All participants must process their own visas, and Adelante can only provide supporting documentation when required and relevant.

Volunteering in Oaxaca was one of the best experiences of my life. My program helped me interact with indigenous Master artisans who taught me many valuable lessons about Oaxaca’s culture and about their indigenous heritage. Oaxaca itself is a very rich source of cultural knowledge and colorful experiences. Everyone was very warm and helpful at my volunteer organization and they guided me throughout my volunteering experience. Adelante also did a great job at finding very centralized housing options, and providing guidance and suggestions for my time in Oaxaca, like assisting to Guelaguetza, a beautiful tradition in which all the regions of Oaxaca showcase their traditional attires and dances. In summary, I can’t wait to go back to Oaxaca again.

This program was perfect for me, and it was a great way to get to know a new city. It made the transition to living in another place as easy as it really could be — finding me housing, an internship, and contacts within the city that could answer any questions or help show me around. The internship was a fantastic fit, which really showed how much Adelante listened to what I wanted from the experience, as well as they attention they payed to what skills I already had. I learned a lot, met many new people, and got to know the amazing city. I even decided to move back to Oaxaca for the rest of the year to work at the art studio where I was previously interning!

I spent two months in Oaxaca de Juarez with the Adelante volunteering program for working with kids. My time there was amazing, being able to experience local life and history of the state. The housing location was in a great spot, and my landlord was unbelievably kind. My time at the language school was also great as I met and made wonderful friends from around the world and also received a one-on-one tutor which helped me immensely. I also met great people at my internship. The program truly opens you up to many differing walks of life and exposes you to so many new things – not just originating from Oaxaca. The trip being my first solo travel forced me to become independent and actually rely on myself instead of using others as a travel-buddy crutch. When Adelante says that the program is for independent travelers, they’re not kidding.
Applying is simple — and free! Once you submit your online application, we’ll send you a link to schedule a quick 30-minute call with our Program Director. Think of this as a chance for both sides to connect: we’ll learn about your goals and background, and you’ll see if our program is the right fit for your adventure abroad.
If it’s a match, you’ll receive your official Letter of Acceptance (perfect to share with your academic advisor if you’re seeking credit!). You’ll then confirm your spot and schedule a second, longer interview. This is where you can bring all your big questions, dive into details, and get excited about what’s ahead.
Next, our team checks your references and sends your profile to our trusted on-the-ground staff in your destination city. They’ll present your file to our network of companies in your chosen field — and once the best fit selects you, your volunteer placement becomes official! You’ll sign a contract, and so will your host organization.
Meanwhile, we’ll arrange your housing (usually a shared apartment, with homestay options in some locations) and get you enrolled in a two-week intensive language course to kick off your experience abroad.
Our goal is always to have your housing and volunteer placement finalized at least 30 days before you depart so you feel confident and prepared.
For students who apply later in the process, sometimes your volunteer placement may still be in progress when you arrive. If that’s the case, don’t worry — you’ll start with your language program and settle into housing right away, while our team continues finalizing your placement. You’ll still be fully supported every step of the way until you’re matched with the right host company or organization.
Yes – You will have your own room in a shared apartment with other Adelante candidates/international students or you will have your own room in a shared Guesthouse (this option typically offers a better chance to have Mexican roommates, not other US students). In both options, plan on doing your own food shopping and your own cooking, quite an eye-opener that first time in a Mexican grocery store! A refundable housing deposit is required during your first week in country. This deposit will be returned to you as long as the housing is in the same condition as when you arrived. The apartments and shared guesthouses are in central Oaxaca, in working neighborhoods, near to public transit, grocery stores, laundry mats, bars, cafes, etc. All apartments & shared guesthouses are fully furnished, with bedding, fully equipped kitchens, sheets, towels, pots, pans and Wi-Fi. Some of our housing options have washing machines available, some do not.
For the first two weeks, you are enrolled in an Intensive Spanish Language course for 4 hours per day, 5 days per week (approximately 40 hours). This course takes place at a prestigious private language institute, in a great location, and your level is determined by a placement test. Each level course is no more than 10 students.
For Mexico, we suggest approximately $125 USD per week, and this covers normal expenses like groceries, bus money, some going out and one or two nearby excursions a month. The price goes up when you start going out at night more and when you begin to travel further away (which we do encourage!).
Yes – Carlos Ortega, our director abroad and a Mexican national, works to ensure that each candidate has an educational and fun experience in Mexico. He is highly involved in the different cultures, dialects and art forms of Oaxacan communities, both in the city and the outlying indigenous areas. You will be meeting with Carlos during your first week of classes and before your work assignment starts. Carlos is accustomed to working with groups from abroad, speaks English fluently and is an extremely good liaison between long-term visitors to Oaxaca and their new “home”.
