Montevideo – Punta del Este
Internships in Uruguay
Intern in Uruguay with housing, placement, and language classes included. Build your resume while living in Montevideo or Punta del Este.
Uruguay sits between Brazil and Argentina along the eastern shore of South America, and it is one of those places that surprises people once they get there. Known for its progressive outlook, high safety, beautiful beaches, and genuinely warm people, it has quietly become one of the most sought-after destinations for young travelers and professionals looking to spend time in South America.
Adelante’s internship programs in Uruguay are based in Punta del Este and Montevideo. Both cities offer distinct experiences and a strong professional environment across a wide range of sectors. Uruguay may be one of South America’s smaller countries, but it consistently delivers an internship experience that interns describe as one of the most meaningful of their lives.
One practical note worth mentioning is that Uruguay’s seasons are reversed from those in the Northern Hemisphere. When it is cold at home, it is summer in Uruguay. High season begins in December, making it a popular destination for students looking to intern during their winter break or at the start of the new year.

Adelante’s programs in Uruguay are based in Punta del Este and Montevideo, two cities that offer very different but equally compelling experiences.
Punta del Este is Uruguay’s most glamorous coastal city, widely known as one of South America’s top beach destinations. It is a lively, international city with a strong professional community, beautiful beaches, and a social scene that attracts visitors from across the region. This is where most Adelante participants are based.
Montevideo, the capital, is a colonial city full of green spaces, public art, and a deeply relaxed way of life. Our favorite neighborhoods for going out and exploring are Pocitos, Parque Rodó, and Ciudad Vieja. The city is surrounded by beaches on three sides and connected by a wide, paved boardwalk that is perfect for jogging, cycling, or simply taking in the river views.
Life outside of your program in Uruguay tends to leave a lasting impression. The beaches alone are worth the trip. Montevideo is surrounded by coastline on three sides, and Punta del Este draws visitors from across South America for its beautiful shores and lively atmosphere.
Cabo Polonio, a remote and car-free coastal village, is a favorite weekend escape for those who want a more rustic and natural beach experience. Punta del Diablo, near the Brazilian border, is another gem worth the journey.
Beyond the beaches, Uruguay has a rich cultural life. The public art in and around Montevideo is genuinely striking. Yerba mate, the herbal infusion that Uruguayans drink constantly and everywhere, is one of those cultural rituals you quickly pick up and carry home.
Tango shows, local markets, language exchanges, and a food scene that reflects Uruguay’s mix of indigenous, European, and South American influences round out a daily life that most interns describe as surprisingly rich and enjoyable.
Most international participants in Adelante’s Uruguay programs enter the country as tourists and do not require a visa for stays of up to 90 days, depending on their nationality. For programs longer than 90 days, additional visa requirements may apply.
Visa requirements vary by nationality and program length. Adelante can provide basic guidance on visa requirements as part of the pre-departure process, but participants are required to check with the Uruguayan Ministry of the Interior in their home country before their start date to confirm the requirements. All participants must process their own visas, and Adelante can only provide supporting documentation when required and relevant.

When I first landed in Montevideo, I didn’t know anyone in the city or what to expect for the next three months I would be staying there. When I first got dropped off at my accommodation, I was so exhausted that I slept all day, got up to shower, and slept all night. However, the next day, my host family took me on a ride in their car along the coast and showed me all the cool spots in Montevideo, which is exactly what I needed to ease my anxiety, and they helped me out when it came to getting groceries and a bus card. My experience at the school was fantastic as well; not only did I enjoy learning Spanish with everyone, but Margo went out of her way to make sure I could reach out and that I had things to do in the city. Through the school, I met friends that I could hang out with, so the city didn’t feel so lonely anymore. I also really enjoyed the mate class with the school! Finally, my time interning in the hospital in Montevideo was absolutely amazing. My Spanish is not advanced enough to keep up with their quick talk and slang, but it has been so cool to see them work behind the scenes and get to know the residents in the urology department. It has also helped me make the decision to continue on the pre-med path in university this year. I have gotten the chance to watch surgeries removing various tumors, including surgery with a robot, which is a very unique and exciting experience for them to let me have, considering I have never worked in the medical field. Overall, I’m so grateful for my time in Montevideo and for all the people that helped make it so special.

Uruguay is a place like no other. I may have come here at the wrong time of year (it’s winter), but if I hadn’t I wouldn’t have been able to work at a place that really enjoy. I’m a college student, and most internships that are out there for people at this level just have you shredding papers and getting coffee. At [my internship] I got the polar opposite. They had me observing classes, working with teachers, running workshops, and substitute teaching. I actually have teaching experience now, which is amazing and surprising from an unpaid internship. It helped that I’m a native English speaker, but they actually had me working and were using my abilities and asking for how I felt about the classes and what my feedback was about them. I actually felt like a valued member of the school. How often can you say that you feel valued at an internship?

I had the opportunity to help out at [Hospital Perrier Rossell] to help tend to newborns that do not have parents to go home to. Before Friday, I had never even held a baby before. Quite honestly, I was slightly uncomfortable the entire time due to my lack of experience with newborns. Though pediatrics might not be my specialty of choice, I do believe that it is still necessary to feel comfortable in any specialty. All the nurses were there to answer my questions or concerns that I had. I felt very welcome and everyone was very ready to teach.
Once you apply online, and there is no charge for this, we send you a link to our calendar to schedule an initial phone or Google Meet assessment interview. This takes about 30 minutes, and in it our Program Director determines if you are a good fit for the program, and you determine if what the program offers, you are wanting to do. Once both parties have mutually assessed positively, then we send out a Letter of Acceptance (for those looking to receive credit for their time abroad, this is a good document to show any academic Advisor) and a set up date for a second, longer phone or Skype interview. Prior to this second meeting, you will be emailed a link to confirm your spot in the program. For the second interview, bring all of your detailed questions and be ready to take a lot of notes! We then check two of your references. Next step is to send your file to our team – Director and Intern Advisor – in your program city abroad. They begin presenting your file to our participating companies abroad, in your desired sector. Once the best company for your specific program parameters chooses your file, we then contract you, with them, for your international internship. You will sign this contract, too. Concurrently, we 1) coordinate the housing you have chosen (shared apartment usually, homestay in some cases); and, 2) enroll you in the two or three week intensive language course / module you will take upon arrival. We like to be done with the entire step by step process by no later than about 30 days prior to your program start date. So, candidates will know both where they are living and where they are interning long before they arrive abroad.
Yes – You can choose your own room in a shared apartment with other Adelante candidates/international students, your own room at the language school where you will take classes, or your own room living with a Uruguayan family. The homestay option provides you with true cultural immersion and includes laundry services and two meals per day. Inquire about the price difference for the homestay. If you choose to live in the apartment, plan on doing your own food shopping and your own cooking, quite an eye-opener that first time in a Uruguayan grocery store! A refundable housing deposit is required during your first week in country. This deposit will be returned to you as long as the housing is in the same condition as when you arrived. The apartments are in sought after, working neighborhoods in Uruguay, near to public transportation. All apartments are fully furnished, with bedding, fully equipped kitchens, washing machine, sheets, towels, pots, pans are also included. All apartments have Wi-Fi.
For the first two weeks, you are enrolled in an Intensive Spanish Language course for 4 hours per day, 5 days per week (approximately 40 hours). This course takes place at a prestigious private language institute and your level is determined by a placement test. Each level course is no more than 10 students.
For Uruguay, we suggest approximately $100 USD per week, and this covers normal expenses like groceries, metro money, some going out and one or two nearby excursions a month. The price goes up when you start going out at night more and when you begin to travel further abroad (which we do encourage!)
Yes – Margo Kros, our Director Abroad and the owner of the Spanish Language School where you will be taking classes, is your resource in Uruguay for your housing, internship, and anything else you may need. You will be meeting with Margo during your first week of classes before your internship starts. She speaks English and you will be given Spanish contact info and emergency contact info to reach her at any time. Margo has ample experience in the education abroad industry.
