Internship Fields
Gain Field Hours and Make a Real Difference through Social Work Internships
Social work is one of the most people-focused professions in the world. When you practice it in another country, with new communities, systems, and languages, it changes how you see and understand others. An international social work internship is more than a step in your career. It’s an experience that shapes the kind of practitioner you will become.
Adelante Abroad offers social work students and graduates hands-on, supervised internships in Spain and Latin America. You’ll work with grassroots organizations and larger international non-profits that support underserved local and immigrant communities. Placements include many areas of social work, such as immigrant rights, rehabilitation, LGBTQ advocacy, at-risk youth programs, services for battered women, and help for people experiencing homelessness.
One of the most important things to know about Adelante’s social work placements: candidates are supervised by a practicing psychologist, psychiatrist, or qualified social worker. This means the hours you log with Adelante Abroad can often count toward your social work accreditation and licensing requirements, making this one of the most professionally substantive international internship options available to BSW and MSW students.

International field experience is increasingly recognized as a mark of a well-rounded, globally competent social work professional. Here’s why social work students choose this path:
Placements are supervised by qualified social work professionals, so your hours can often count toward BSW, MSW, or licensing requirements. Confirm with your program advisor before applying.
A core skill in social work that is difficult to fully achieve without an immersive international experience.
Our placements connect you with immigrant communities, at-risk youth, individuals in recovery, and others whose experiences will deepen your practice for life.
Working in Spanish-speaking social work environments develops bilingual skills that make you more effective and employable in a diverse caseload landscape.
Most Adelante interns receive academic credit through their home university, with full documentation support from our team.
Before applying, ask yourself: what do you ultimately see yourself doing? Working in a public school setting? Forming part of a treatment team for people with mental health conditions, illnesses, or disabilities? Creating and administering programs or shaping policy? Pursuing private practice or clinical social work? Your answer will help us find the right placement for you.
Adelante offers the widest destination range. Social work placements are available in seven locations: Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, Uruguay, Chile, Ecuador, and Oaxaca, Mexico. Whatever region interests you, we have a placement to match.
Social work is a broad field, and our placements reflect that. Here’s a look at the types of work our social work interns have taken on across their placements:
Most Adelante social work placements are hands-on and client-facing from early in the program. Depending on your placement, you may assist with intake assessments, support case management, accompany clients to appointments, help facilitate group sessions, or provide direct support to individuals and families navigating difficult circumstances. All client-facing work is supervised by a qualified practitioner.
Many placements involve active community outreach, working within neighborhoods to connect underserved populations with services, run educational workshops, support health and wellness initiatives, and help organizations extend their reach. This is where social work meets public health, education, and advocacy in the most direct and human way.
Adelante’s social work placements span a wide range of specialized issue areas, including immigrant rights and refugee services, at-risk youth and juvenile justice, health education, battered women and domestic violence support, LGBTQ advocacy and services, drug and alcohol rehabilitation, and homelessness assistance and housing support. Your placement is matched to your interests and academic background.
For candidates interested in the macro side of social work, such as program design, policy advocacy, and organizational development, some placements offer involvement in administrative functions, grant reporting, program evaluation, and policy-related tasks. These roles are well-suited to MSW students with a policy or management concentration.

I have been loving [my internship] already. My coworkers, and my boss, Antonia, have all been wonderful. They are patient with me as I work on my Spanish, and I have began to learn the ins and outs of what they do there. Next week, I will be giving my own presentation in Spanish, and I am looking forward to it!

I have also made some friends and I enjoy my weekends with them (since they have classes during the weekdays). I’m sad to leave Chile because I don’t know when I’ll see them again. I know one of my new friends said she will try to do her exchange in France so we can see each other again. Before I head back to France, my friend has invited me to visit her hometown in the south of Chile! I’m going to treasure every moment we have together. As for traveling, I am actually going to Peru this coming weekend. I will definitely send more photos after my trip. I also hope to visit the Atacama desert and some cities in the south soon!

Everything has been PERFECT. My internship is going great and my projects aren’t too demanding. The host mother is the sweetest woman EVER and the other Ecuadorians in the house are very friendly and welcoming. I’ve been traveling around Ecuador as well and I must say, this country is GORGEOUS. I’ve made some great Ecuadorian friends and had some unforgettable experiences. I honestly couldn’t ask for more.
Getting a social work internship abroad is simple. The first thing you need to do is fill out an application for an internship abroad. From there a resume is requested with previous experience, volunteer work, or projects completed in the social work sector. Internships in Spanish speaking countries usually require a low-intermediate Spanish speaking level so you can communicate with your program director. Once we get your resume and completed online application, you will speak with our program director who will begin searching for an internship that will take you.
Yes, through Adelante Abroad programs, placements are available in private clinics for social work internships. Many of our past candidates have interned in clinics so they get real, hands on experience shadowing and learning from social work professionals.
Imagine getting to help individuals suffering from addiction, homelessness, mental and/or physical illness, or abuse. These are just some of the types of patients that our interns have helped out in the past. Working internationally with an internship in countries like Spain, Uruguay, Ecuador, Chile, or Mexico allow for our alumni to get not only real experience to add onto their resume but also improved Spanish language and cultural competence.
During international internships in social work, individuals will learn how other countries help and treat people with mental illnesses, abuse, addiction, homelessness, and more. Students can also assist the care team in planning and coordinating treatment while being assigned to educate communities in mental and physical illness, abuse, and the community resources available. Beyond the internship, you will learn how to navigate a new country, improve your Spanish, and get out of your comfort zone.
A social work intern can participate in many different tasks while abroad. Some tasks may include shadowing clinicians on communicating patients and assist with the treatment of mental and psychological disorders, monitor and record patient progress with assistance, speak with individuals who are facing abuse, homelessness, mental or physical illnesses, or poverty, for example.
For an internship abroad, nothing should be expected. As this is something many of you have never done before, you do not have anything to compare it to. All of our placements for social work internships are different depending on the time of year, location of internship, clinic or organization interns are placed with, time you are able to be abroad, and previous social work experience. The only thing you should really expect is that social work internships are part time for 20 hours a week.
After you’ve been accepted into the program, our team carefully matches you with a host company based on your background, goals, and interests. Your internship placement will be finalized 1 month before your departure date, giving you plenty of time to prepare for your experience abroad.
