Build Your Medical Career Abroad
There is no better way to understand how healthcare works than by being inside a functioning clinical environment in another country. A medical or nursing internship abroad places you directly alongside healthcare professionals, in real hospitals, clinics, and community health settings, where the work is real and the learning is immediate.
Many students find that international healthcare settings offer a level of hands-on involvement that is difficult to access at home, especially early in their training. Working in a different healthcare system exposes you to medical cases, procedures, and patient care approaches that broaden your clinical perspective in ways a domestic placement simply cannot.
Medical and nursing placements with Adelante Abroad are available in Spain, Ecuador, Chile, and Uruguay. An intermediate level of Spanish is required for most placements, as you will be working directly within Spanish-speaking healthcare environments.

An international healthcare internship gives you clinical exposure that is difficult to access as a student in your home country. Here is why medical and nursing students choose to intern abroad with Adelante:
Past interns were granted access to patients and allowed to assist with procedures that would not typically be available to undergraduate or pre-med students at home.
Observing how policies, procedures, and patient care differ across countries gives you a perspective that makes you a more adaptable and informed healthcare professional.
Working in a Spanish-speaking healthcare environment develops medical vocabulary and communication skills that are increasingly valuable in diverse patient care settings.
International clinical experience demonstrates initiative, cross-cultural competency, and real-world exposure that stands out in competitive applications.
Most Adelante interns receive academic credit through their home university, with full documentation support from our team.
Medical and nursing placements are open to students studying nursing, medicine, public health, or related healthcare fields, as well as recent graduates. Pre-med and pre-nursing students are also welcome to apply.
Medical and nursing is a broad field, and our placements reflect that. Here is a look at the types of work our medical and nursing interns have taken on across their placements:
Work directly with nursing staff in clinics, hospitals, community health centers, and school nursing offices. Depending on your placement, you will assist with patient care and support day-to-day clinical operations across a variety of healthcare settings.
Many placements give you the opportunity to move through different departments throughout your program. One intern in Ecuador rotated through General Medicine, Pediatrics, and Emergency Medicine at a busy municipal hospital in Ambato, observing surgeries, births, and c-sections, assisting with minor procedures, and encountering disease presentations not commonly seen in the United States.
Work closely alongside a physician or specialist over an extended period. In Spain, interns have had the opportunity to work with some of the top surgeons in Europe, gaining firsthand exposure to medical practice at a high level in a different healthcare system.
Some interns are recommended to assist doctors during a 24-hour shift per week, taking on a variety of medical cases. In one placement, an intern was scheduled to observe a robotic operation for live experience in the operating room.

When I first landed in Montevideo, I didn’t know anyone in the city or what to expect for the next three months I would be staying there. When I first got dropped off at my accommodation, I was so exhausted that I slept all day, got up to shower, and slept all night. However, the next day, my host family took me on a ride in their car along the coast and showed me all the cool spots in Montevideo, which is exactly what I needed to ease my anxiety, and they helped me out when it came to getting groceries and a bus card. My experience at the school was fantastic as well; not only did I enjoy learning Spanish with everyone, but Margo went out of her way to make sure I could reach out and that I had things to do in the city. Through the school, I met friends that I could hang out with, so the city didn’t feel so lonely anymore. I also really enjoyed the mate class with the school! Finally, my time interning in the hospital in Montevideo was absolutely amazing. My Spanish is not advanced enough to keep up with their quick talk and slang, but it has been so cool to see them work behind the scenes and get to know the residents in the urology department. It has also helped me make the decision to continue on the pre-med path in university this year. I have gotten the chance to watch surgeries removing various tumors, including surgery with a robot, which is a very unique and exciting experience for them to let me have, considering I have never worked in the medical field. Overall, I’m so grateful for my time in Montevideo and for all the people that helped make it so special.

I had the opportunity to help out at [Hospital Perrier Rossell] to help tend to newborns that do not have parents to go home to. Before Friday, I had never even held a baby before. Quite honestly, I was slightly uncomfortable the entire time due to my lack of experience with newborns. Though pediatrics might not be my specialty of choice, I do believe that it is still necessary to feel comfortable in any specialty. All the nurses were there to answer my questions or concerns that I had. I felt very welcome and everyone was very ready to teach.
