Intern & Study Abroad in Spain

About Spain

Spain is Adelante’s most popular destination, and it has been from the very beginning. The country offers a world-class professional environment, a deeply immersive Spanish-speaking culture, a food and social scene that quickly becomes part of your daily routine, and three distinct cities that each offer a genuinely different experience.

Adelante’s Spain programs are available in Madrid, Barcelona, and Seville, with internship programs running year-round across more than 30 career fields. Seville is also home to Adelante’s only study abroad program in Spain, offering spring, summer, and fall semester options for academic credit. Whether you are here for a month or six, Spain has a way of getting into your rhythm quickly.

Be ready to walk. To the metro, to the market, to work, to tapas, to wherever the night takes you. Walking is the norm in all three cities, and it is one of the best ways to get to know them.

Location & Program Information

About Madrid, Barcelona & Seville

Adelante’s Spain programs are based in three cities, each with its own distinct personality and a lot to offer interns beyond the workplace.

Madrid is Spain’s capital and one of Europe’s most well-connected cities. The metro system is extensive and easy to navigate, making it simple to get to your placement, explore the city, and travel further afield on weekends. Interns are housed in sought-after, working neighborhoods close to metro stations and bus stops. From Madrid, you can get to Portugal, France, Morocco, and Andorra very inexpensively.

Barcelona sits on the Mediterranean coast and is one of Europe’s most international cities. Public transit is reliable and affordable, and the city is highly walkable. Adelante housing in Barcelona is in well-connected neighborhoods close to metro and bus stops. From Barcelona, weekend travel to other parts of Spain, France, and beyond is easy and inexpensive.

Seville is flat and highly walkable, with a historic center that has been converted into pedestrian-only streets. The city also has a public bike rental system, making it one of the most accessible cities in Spain for daily life. Adelante housing in Seville is in central, working neighborhoods close to public transit and everything the city has to offer.

Life in Spain

Life outside of your program in Spain varies by city, but a few things are universal: you will walk a lot, eat well, and stay out late.

In Madrid, the city rewards those who explore it on foot. Retiro Park and the Royal Botanical Garden are great places to spend a slow afternoon. Free walking tours are one of the best ways to see more of the city and miss less. Football season runs from September through April, and watching a match at the Bernabéu is an experience in itself. The nightlife starts well after midnight and runs until the sun comes up.

In Barcelona, Park Güell, the Gothic Quarter, and La Barceloneta beach are all worth your time. The city comes alive at night when everything is lit up. From Barcelona, you can get to Portugal, France, Morocco, and Andorra very inexpensively, making weekend travel easy and rewarding.

In Seville, the tapeo, going out for tapas from bar to bar, is a way of life. Spring is particularly special, with the Semana Santa and Feria festivals transforming the city. The historic center has been turned into pedestrian-only streets, making it one of the most walkable cities in Spain. Seville also organizes excursions for interns, such as a flamenco show outing, a monument visit, a tapas tour, and a Spanish cooking class.

Visa Information

Most international participants in Adelante’s Spain programs enter the country on a tourist or student visa, depending on their nationality and the length of their program. EU and many non-EU nationals can stay in Spain for up to 90 days without a visa. For programs longer than 90 days, a student visa is typically required.

Adelante can provide basic guidance on visa requirements as part of the pre-departure process, but participants are required to check with the Spanish consulate or embassy in their home country before their start date to confirm the requirements. All participants must process their own visas, and Adelante can only provide supporting documentation when required and relevant.
