Quito – Ambato
Internships in Ecuador
Intern in Ecuador with housing, placement, and language classes included. Guaranteed placements across multiple fields; programs start monthly.
Ecuador is one of South America’s most diverse and culturally rich countries, sitting right on the Equator where the Andes, the Amazon, and the Pacific coast all meet within a relatively small geography. It is a country that consistently surprises people who come here, and a destination that Adelante has been proud to call home for its programs for many years.
Adelante’s internship placements in Ecuador are primarily based in Quito, the country’s capital, with a few placements also available in the city of Ambato. Quito holds the distinction of being the world’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site and the highest-altitude capital city in the world, sitting at 9,100 feet in the Andes between two volcanoes. It is a city of remarkable history, energy, and character, and one that leaves a lasting impression on almost everyone who spends time there.
Ecuador offers a professional experience, a cultural depth, and a way of life that is genuinely unlike anywhere else in Latin America. Adelante’s programs here offer a placement and a setting that is hard to match anywhere in the region.

Adelante’s programs in Ecuador are primarily based in Quito, the country’s capital, with placements also available in the city of Ambato.
Quito is the world’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site and the highest-altitude capital city in the world, sitting at 9,100 feet in the Andes between two volcanoes. It is a city of over two million people with a remarkable mix of colonial history and modern urban life. Adelante’s housing and Spanish language classes are based in the La Mariscal district, a well-connected neighborhood filled with restaurants, cafes, businesses, and easy access to public transit.
Ambato, located about two and a half hours south of Quito in the central Andes, is a city known for its flowers, vibrant produce markets, and close-knit community feel. Placements here offer a more grounded and immersive experience in Ecuador’s highlands.
Life in Quito offers a lot more than most people expect. The La Mariscal district, where Adelante participants are based, has a lively mix of restaurants, cafes, and nightlife, and the historic center is a short trip away for weekend explorations of churches, museums, and Andean plazas. The city also has a vibrant culinary scene that reflects Ecuador’s mix of indigenous, colonial, and modern influences.
Weekend travel from Quito is one of the real highlights of the program. The Galápagos Islands are accessible by flight and are among the most extraordinary natural destinations on Earth. The Amazon is within reach for those who want to explore Ecuador’s jungle regions.
Closer to the city, the Avenue of the Volcanoes offers dramatic Andean scenery, and the equatorial monument at Ciudad Mitad del Mundo is a short drive from Quito’s center. Ecuador packs an extraordinary range of experiences into a compact geography that makes it easy to explore on weekends and time off.
Most international participants in Adelante’s Ecuador programs enter the country as tourists and do not require a visa for stays of up to 90 days, depending on their nationality. For programs longer than 90 days, additional visa requirements may apply.
Visa requirements vary by nationality and program length. Adelante can provide basic guidance on visa requirements as part of the pre-departure process, but participants are required to check with the Ecuadorian consulate or embassy in their home country before their start date to confirm the requirements. All participants must process their own visas, and Adelante can only provide supporting documentation when required and relevant.

My two months in Ecuador was an incredible experience! I lived in Quito with an Ecuadorian family and completed 2 weeks of Spanish Language classes before beginning a 6-week placement at a veterinary clinic. Not only did I gain incredible skills and knowledge from my work placement that I can apply towards veterinary school in Canada, but I was also able to travel around Ecuador and get to know its culture and people. My main goal out of this experience was to learn to speak another language. I came to Ecuador with some basic Spanish but being immersed in it every day, both at home with my host family and at work, allowed me to accomplish this goal. I met so many amazing people during my time in Ecuador and I am so thankful for this amazing experience!
